Community Food Kitchen, Granton, Edinburgh – Rapid Turnaround Redecoration

Three-Day Turnaround for a Vital Community Food Kitchen

Thistle Decorators was appointed to carry out the redecoration of a community food kitchen in Granton, Edinburgh, providing food and support to homeless and disadvantaged people within the local community.

As the kitchen provides an important service, one of the key priorities was minimising downtime. The organisation needed to regain full use of its facilities as quickly as possible, requiring our team to carefully plan and deliver the complete decorating programme within a very tight timeframe.

The entire project was completed in just three days, allowing the kitchen to return to normal use with minimal disruption to the people who rely on its services.

Project Overview

  • Location: Granton, Edinburgh
  • Project: Community Food Kitchen Redecoration
  • Turnaround: 3 Days
  • Decorating Contractor: Thistle Decorators
  • Key Requirements: Rapid turnaround, durable finishes and high-traffic protection

The Challenge

Unlike many decorating projects, the key consideration here wasn’t simply achieving a high-quality finish – time was critical.

Every additional day the kitchen was unavailable had the potential to affect the important work being carried out for people within the local community.

Our team therefore planned the works around a three-day turnaround, coordinating preparation, repairs, sealing and finishing so that each stage could progress efficiently without compromising the quality of the completed work.

Preparation & Repairs

Achieving the required finish started with thorough preparation and repairs.

Damaged and imperfect areas were repaired using products from the Toupret filler range, bringing the surfaces up to the required standard before decoration.

Where necessary, a shellac-based sealer was applied to isolate and seal problematic areas before the finishing coats were applied.

This provided a sound foundation for the new decorative system and helped prevent existing marks or staining from affecting the finished surfaces.

Ceiling & Wall Finishes

The ceilings were finished using an ultra-flat matt coating, creating a clean and uniform appearance while helping minimise the visibility of surface imperfections.

For the walls, a durable matt finish was selected to withstand the demands of a busy community kitchen, where surfaces are subject to considerably more contact, cleaning and general wear than in a typical domestic environment. The durable wall coating provided the clean appearance required while offering increased resilience for day-to-day use.

Additional Protection for High-Traffic Areas

The lower sections of the walls required additional protection due to the nature of the environment.

These areas are particularly susceptible to frequent contact, moisture changes, food preparation activity and the general wear associated with a busy working kitchen.

After painting, the lower walls received two coats of Rocktop protective coating, creating a fully sealed and more robust surface.

This additional protective system was chosen to improve durability and help the decorated surfaces withstand regular use and cleaning. It demonstrates how the correct decorating specification can be adapted to the environment rather than simply applying the same finish throughout.

A Three-Day Turnaround

Careful planning was essential to completing the project within the required timeframe.

Our decorators worked systematically through the preparation, filling, sealing, painting and protective coating stages, ensuring the work progressed efficiently while maintaining the required standard of finish.

From the initial preparation through to the final protective coatings, the entire decorating programme was delivered within three days.

For the client, this meant the kitchen could be returned to full use quickly, allowing them to continue providing food and support to homeless and disadvantaged people throughout the Granton area.

The Result

The completed project provided the community kitchen with a cleaner, brighter and more durable working environment, with finishes selected specifically to cope with the demands of a high-traffic food preparation space.

More importantly, the rapid turnaround kept disruption to this important community service to a minimum.

This project demonstrates Thistle Decorators’ ability to combine careful preparation, specialist products, durable coating systems and efficient project delivery when working in environments where downtime needs to be tightly controlled.

We’re proud to have played a small part in helping this valuable community facility continue the work it does for people across the local area.
